What are Bulbs?

Bulbs

Bulbs are underground collections of leaves that are modified for food storage. This collection is a method of asexual propagation. All bulbs are monocotyledons (monocots) and have leaves that are secured at the basal disk at the bottom. True bulbs are similar to tubers, corms, and rhizomes.

There are two types of bulbs: hardy and tender.

Hardy Bulbs

These bulbs are planted in the fall and flower in the spring. Hardy bulbs can withstand cold temperatures and stay in ground all year long.

Tender Bulbs

These bulbs are planted in the spring for summer flowers. Tender bulbs must be dug up in cold areas and stored over winter, them replanted in the spring.
